Registration Q & A

Who may register?

Any child born between August 1, 1989 and July 31, 2004 may register for the Region 870 2008/2009 season. Our league does not have tryouts and welcomes both new and experienced soccer players.

Are players placed on teams in the order in which they register?

No. All players who register by June 25 will be placed on teams. Team formation is conducted by the Registrar and Region Board in July.

I can't attend one of the scheduled registrations. Can I register late?

To ensure placement on a team, please register by June 25. We will conduct late registration in August to fill out teams that still have openings, but registration by June 25 is STRONGLY recommended. Registration availability after June 25 cannot be guaranteed.

How are teams formed?

AYSO philosophies call for Balanced Teams, and this is the number one priority during team formation. Teams are formed so that they have an equal number of new and experienced players, and so that ages are balanced. After team balance is ensured, the board tries to match players by geographic location and buddy requests where possible.

Will there be separate YMCA teams?

No. To ensure team balance, all teams in 2008/2009 will be formed as AYSO teams. All coaches will be trained by AYSO. AYSO and YMCA share the philosophy that youth sports should be fun, fair, and safe, with emphasis on positive coaching, good sportsmanship, fitness, and character development.

What are the age divisions?

Region 870 separates divisions by gender and age using the same birthday cutoff as the Albany and Lebanon school districts, so children will usually play with their peers from school. Typical age divisions are U6 (pre-K), U8 (grades 1-2), U10 (grades 3-4), U12 (grades 5-6), U14 (grades 7-8), and U19 (high school). U19 teams are coed. The region may combine divisions and/or genders as player numbers dictate.

I want to be placed on a team with a friend. Is this possible?

You may request to be placed with a friend, however buddy requests cannot be guaranteed. Retention of players on any team shall be limited to the head coach’s child(ren). Once teams are formed, no transfer of any player from one team to another may be made without the approval of the Regional Commissioner, the coaches of both teams involved, and the parent or guardian of the player.

I live in Lebanon. Will I have to travel to Albany for practice and games?

AYSO Region 870 intends to form Lebanon-based teams which practice and play at fields in Lebanon, Lacomb, and surrounding communities. Since this is our first year in Lebanon we are not yet sure how many players we will have in east Linn county. It is our intention to form as many Lebanon-based teams as possible, with those teams playing games in the Lebanon area as much as possible. It may be necessary to travel to Albany for some games, and some Albany teams may travel to Lebanon for games as well. Practice locations are determined by coaches.

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee covers the complete Fall 2008 AND Spring 2009 seasons. Most of the fee pays for the player's AYSO registration/insurance fee, plus a uniform consisting of a jersey, shorts, and socks. Other region expenses include field painting and maintenance, field rental, game equipment, volunteer training, coach equipment, referee uniforms, and publicity. A complete budget is published annually in the Touchline newsletter, and is available to any member upon request. All AYSO coaches, referees, board members, and other helpers are volunteers. AYSO is a non-profit organization.

When and where are games played?

Traditionally all AYSO Region 870 games have been played on Saturdays at Timber-Linn Park in Albany. Games usually run between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Older age groups teams may periodically travel to other locations in the mid-valley for away games, and may play some weekday evening games as necessary. Alternate times and locations will be considered if field capacity at Timber-Linn is exceeded.

I want to volunteer. Why must I provide my social security number?

AYSO is committed to providing a child safe program, where children can develop in a safe, fair, and fun environment. The national AYSO program conducts background checks on all coaches, referees, team parents, board members, and other volunteers who may have contact with children. Social security numbers MUST be provided in order to complete these background checks. The Region 870 board has members specifically trained to handle personal information in a secure, confidential manner. Submitted volunteer applications are sent by registered mail to the national AYSO program which conducts background checks. Application copies retained locally do not include your SSN. Your privacy is of the utmost importance to our region.

TIP: If you do not feel comfortable providing your social security number to local staff, fill out a volunteer application online using the secure server at www.eayso.org. After you fill out the online application, print two copies and bring them to training or Team Orientation. Volunteer applications printed from EAYSO have "XXX-XX-XXXX" in place of your social security number.

We are in the process of building a Registrar Team. Regional Registrar can be a big job, but we are forming a team to reduce the workload on any one person. Would you like to join us? We are looking for the following team members:
